Mind-muscle connection - real and useful, or just broscience?
Is 'mind-muscle connection' actually a thing or is it gym mysticism? I see people talk about 'feeling' the muscle but I just move the weight. Does focusing on the target muscle actually change results?
Re: Mind-muscle connection - real and useful, or just broscience?
It's real and has some research behind it, especially for isolation work and smaller muscles. Consciously focusing on contracting the target muscle can increase its activation. It matters less on heavy compounds where you should just focus on moving the load.

So focus on the muscle for curls and laterals, focus on the lift for squats and deadlifts?
Re: Mind-muscle connection - real and useful, or just broscience?
Pretty much. Internal focus (the muscle) helps isolations; external focus (move the weight, hit depth) is better for big compound performance.

Practically, slowing the eccentric and using a weight you can control is how you 'find' the connection. If you're swinging heavy, you'll never feel the target muscle. Lighter and controlled on isolations made my arms and delts actually grow.

It also keeps you honest about form and tension - chasing the feel naturally cleans up sloppy reps. Not magic, just attention. Useful tool, not a religion.

Makes sense - real for isolations, controlled tempo to find it, not something to force on heavy compounds. Appreciate the clear take.
