Linear vs block periodization for an intermediate - is the complexity worth it?
I've outgrown just adding weight every session. People talk about block periodization but it sounds complicated. As an early intermediate, is it worth the complexity or is something simpler fine?
Re: Linear vs block periodization for an intermediate - is the complexity worth it?
For an early intermediate, you usually don't need full block periodization yet. A simple weekly or wave progression (e.g. heavier and lighter days, or adding reps then weight) extends your gains a long way before you need formal blocks.
Re: Linear vs block periodization for an intermediate - is the complexity worth it?
Agreed. Don't jump to advanced periodization to look sophisticated. Squeeze the simple stuff first - daily/weekly undulation or just a basic 'add weight when you hit the top of the rep range' approach works for years.

So save the blocks for when simpler progression genuinely stalls?

Exactly. Complexity should be earned by necessity, not adopted for its own sake.

Block periodization (accumulation/intensification/peak) shines when you're advanced enough that you can't progress every week and you're peaking for something. For general size and strength as an intermediate, it's overkill that adds admin without much benefit yet.
Re: Linear vs block periodization for an intermediate - is the complexity worth it?
Run a simple progression hard, track it, deload when needed. When that truly stops working - not when you get bored - then explore blocks. You'll get more from mastering the basics longer.

Clear - simple progression until it's genuinely exhausted, then periodize. Not going to overcomplicate it. Thanks all.
