Chasing bigger SBD numbers but every time I push hard I end up with a niggle. How do you all train heavy consistently without breaking down? Feels like a constant trade-off between progress and joints.
The lifters who stay healthy almost all do the same things: thorough warmups, leaving a rep or two in the tank most sessions, and not maxing every week. Most work in the 75-87% range, heavy singles sparingly, deloads on schedule.
I probably go too heavy too often, if I'm honest.
That's the usual culprit. Grinding near-max reps weekly is how niggles pile up. Train submaximal most of the time and the injuries largely disappear.
From a recovery side - manage your weak links. Pre-hab the shoulders, hips and lower back with some light targeted work, sleep enough, and don't ignore early niggles. A small tweak you train through becomes a big one fast.
I do tend to push through small aches.
Stop doing that. Back off a session or two early and you save weeks. Pushing through is how niggles become injuries.
Technique consistency too - most 'random' injuries are a form breakdown under fatigue. Film your heavy sets, keep the bar path and bracing tight, and stop the set when form degrades rather than grinding an ugly rep.
This is a really clear picture - submaximal volume, leave reps in the tank, deload, pre-hab, respect niggles, keep form tight. Going to restructure around that. Thanks all.
