Thyroid Health: Beyond TSH - What Else to Monitor?
Our thyroid is a master regulator, but often, only TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is checked. Let's discuss why a broader panel is often necessary for truly understanding thyroid health. What other markers do you find important, and what are your tips for optimal thyroid function?
Re: Thyroid Health: Beyond TSH - What Else to Monitor?
Free T3 and Free T4 are absolutely critical! TSH tells you what your brain is *asking* the thyroid to do, but Free T3 and T4 tell you what the thyroid is *actually producing* and what's *available* for your cells to use. Many symptoms persist even with "normal" TSH if these are off.
Re: Thyroid Health: Beyond TSH - What Else to Monitor?
Reverse T3 (rT3) is another important one, especially if symptoms like fatigue and weight gain persist despite decent Free T3/T4. High rT3 can block active thyroid hormone from reaching cells. And don't forget thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb) to check for autoimmunity like Hashimoto's.

Nutrition is huge for thyroid. Ensuring adequate selenium, zinc, iodine, and tyrosine are key precursors and cofactors. Brazil nuts for selenium, seafood for iodine, etc.

Avoiding inflammatory foods like gluten and excessive sugar can also make a big difference, especially for autoimmune thyroid conditions. Gut health is closely linked to thyroid health.
Re: Thyroid Health: Beyond TSH - What Else to Monitor?
You've all provided excellent insights into the comprehensive thyroid panel! RecoveryRx, your point on rT3 is vital. What about stress management and adequate sleep in supporting thyroid function?
Re: Thyroid Health: Beyond TSH - What Else to Monitor?
Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which can inhibit the conversion of T4 to the active T3. So, stress management isn't just good for adrenals; it's crucial for thyroid too.
Re: Thyroid Health: Beyond TSH - What Else to Monitor?
And sleep deprivation increases thyroid-binding globulin (TBG), which binds up thyroid hormones, making less free hormone available to cells. Sleep really is foundational.
Re: Thyroid Health: Beyond TSH - What Else to Monitor?
Also, being aware of environmental toxins like heavy metals and fluoride, which can interfere with thyroid function.
