My doc keeps warning me about “high protein diets.” I’m at 1.2g per lb bodyweight. Anyone actually run into problems or is this just outdated advice?

If your kidneys are healthy, that amount of protein is totally normal. Most lifters sit around 1–1.2g per lb without issues.

Docs usually give that warning because a lot of people already have unknown kidney problems. For healthy folks, high protein isn’t harmful.

I’ve been eating around that level for years. Bloodwork is always clean. Hydration matters more than people think though.

Yeah my bloodwork has been fine so far. Just didn’t know if the long-term intake would suddenly cause issues.

A lot of research says high protein is only a problem if you already have kidney disease. Otherwise it’s just extra amino acids your body filters normally.

The old “protein hurts kidneys” idea came from studies on people with pre-existing conditions. Not gym-goers.

If anything, most lifters under-eat protein. Your numbers are pretty standard for strength training.

Keep monitoring labs once or twice a year and you’re good. If creatinine and eGFR stay solid, no need to stress.
