Too Much Protein = Kidney Issues?
My doc keeps warning me about “high protein diets.” I’m at 1.2g per lb bodyweight. Anyone actually run into problems or is this just outdated advice?
Re: Too Much Protein = Kidney Issues?
If your kidneys are healthy, that amount of protein is totally normal. Most lifters sit around 1–1.2g per lb without issues.
Re: Too Much Protein = Kidney Issues?
Docs usually give that warning because a lot of people already have unknown kidney problems. For healthy folks, high protein isn’t harmful.
Re: Too Much Protein = Kidney Issues?
I’ve been eating around that level for years. Bloodwork is always clean. Hydration matters more than people think though.
Re: Too Much Protein = Kidney Issues?
Yeah my bloodwork has been fine so far. Just didn’t know if the long-term intake would suddenly cause issues.
Re: Too Much Protein = Kidney Issues?
A lot of research says high protein is only a problem if you already have kidney disease. Otherwise it’s just extra amino acids your body filters normally.
Re: Too Much Protein = Kidney Issues?
The old “protein hurts kidneys” idea came from studies on people with pre-existing conditions. Not gym-goers.
Re: Too Much Protein = Kidney Issues?
If anything, most lifters under-eat protein. Your numbers are pretty standard for strength training.
Re: Too Much Protein = Kidney Issues?
Keep monitoring labs once or twice a year and you’re good. If creatinine and eGFR stay solid, no need to stress.
