Static vs. Dynamic Stretching: When and Why?

Following up on warm-ups, let's discuss the big debate: **static vs. dynamic stretching**. When do you prefer to use each, and for what purpose? I personally advocate for dynamic before, and static after or on rest days for flexibility.

Definitely dynamic pre-workout. Static stretching pre-lifting feels like it saps my strength. Post-workout, I'll do some static holds, especially for my quads and hamstrings, to aid recovery and maintain flexibility.

Agreed with PowerLifterPro. Dynamic for cycling warm-up. Static stretching I do a few times a week, completely separate from my rides, to work on my overall flexibility. My hips and lower back can get really tight from riding.

I use dynamic for everything. Static stretching, I find, is best when combined with breathing exercises for a deeper release. I do that on my active recovery days. Keeps me limber for my various activities.

For me, it's about context. If I'm preparing for intense exercise, dynamic is non-negotiable. If I'm trying to improve my long-term flexibility, then static stretching, held for 30 seconds or more, is my choice, usually after a warm bath or shower.

It sounds like we're all generally on the same page regarding dynamic pre-activity. HealthExplorer, you hit on a good point about the "long-term flexibility" aspect of static stretching. It's a different goal entirely.

Has anyone found that static stretching *before* a heavy lifting session actually *hinders* performance? I definitely notice a drop in strength.

Yes, absolutely. It makes my legs feel "loose" and not as powerful for the initial push-off on the bike.

It can definitely decrease power output temporarily. That's why dynamic is so important for performance.
