The tricky part is figuring out how much to adjust without going overboard. Some people add an extra serving of rice or protein during a bulk, while others reduce calorie-dense foods and keep their protein intake high during a cut. I'm curious how everyone handles portion sizes in real life. Do you track every meal, use portion estimates, or adjust based on changes in your strength, weight, and overall progress?
One thing I've noticed in the gym is that changing your physique isn't just about switching up your workout routine. Your food portions make a huge difference, too. When bulking, you're trying to eat enough to support muscle growth, recover from heavy sessions, and keep your lifts moving up. When cutting, the goal shifts toward dropping body fat while holding on to as much muscle and strength as possible.

During a bulk, I usually add another serving of rice and a little extra protein. Nothing crazy, just enough to support my training.
I'm more focused on keeping protein consistent in both phases. When I'm cutting, I pull back on carbs and fats a bit instead of making my meals ridiculously small. It helps me stay full and still have enough energy to push through my workouts.
I honestly eat bigger portions on leg days. Those heavy squats and RDLs leave me hungry as hell.
Meal prep makes portion control so much easier for me. When I'm bulking, I'll increase my rice, potatoes, and oats, but during a cut, I keep the protein portions steady and load up on veggies. That way, I'm not constantly fighting hunger or guessing what to eat.
Tracking macros helped me stop eyeballing everything.
I used to make the mistake of cutting my portions way too aggressively because I wanted quick results. My strength started dropping, recovery got worse, and I was hungry all day. Now I make smaller adjustments and watch my weekly weight trend instead of reacting to every scale fluctuation.
